This Catalan city makes the ideal mini-break… and not just for foodies, says Nicola Brady.

10am: Riverside Walk
Known by many as the gateway to the Costa Brava, Girona is a little dream of a city. Start off with a walk along the River Onyar. The ramble of amber-hued buildings along the water’s edge give off a cool vibe.

How: Fly Aer Lingus ( to Barcelona and Girona is 40 minutes away by train. Ryanair ( flies direct to Girona from April to October. Stay at Hotel Carlemany (

2pm: Girona Cathedral
Plan a visit during Temps de Flors in May, and you’ll find the entire city swathed in fresh flowers, from tiny alleyways to the Cathedral’s sweeping steps. Outside of the festival, the gothic cathedral is still quite a sight to behold. Use it as a starting point for a stroll atop the ancient city walls, or Passeig de la Muralla, for excellent views out into the countryside (and sneaky glimpses into private gardens).
