The Begur Experience

Begur Costa Brava what to do and where to go.

There are a great range of different courses close to Begur. The nearest is Platja de Pals, a tree -lined tight course, Par 73. It is a flat course, however it is more demanding than it appears and keeping the ball out of the trees can be a challenge!! Green fees in this area are not cheap, however, open days can be a little cheaper.      34 972 66 77 39

2 km further away you have Emporda Golf, a complex with two courses -Links Par71 and Forest Par 72. Here they have an open day on a Wed. called the birdie club. These are two very different courses and will give you two very different experiences.     34 972 76 04 50

Other courses in the area I have played include Club Golf D’Aro-Mas-Nou -very interesting course with fantastic views.Par 72    34 972 82 69 00

And PGA Golf de Catalunya – under an hour from Begur, close to Girona Airport – a course for low handicap golfers – two courses – included in the top ten courses in continental Europe.   34 972 47 25 77Image

This City is the capital of the Alt d’Emporda area and has a population of 40,000 people. It is home to one of the World’s most popular museums, the Teatre-Museu Dali, which was created by Dali who spent his final days here and is buried in the crypt. It is a must for visitors to the area; it is advisable to arrive early and be prepared to queue. Opening times are July-September 9:00-20:00, Oct-June 10:30-18:00.

The Rambla, a tree-lined boulevard built over a river bed in the 1930’s connects the old and new parts of the town. Various café-bars fringe the Rambla and there are markets on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Other places to visit:-

Dali Prints The Toy Museum (Just off the Rambla)

Barri Antic (The Old Town between the Rambla and the Dali museum)

Castell de Sant Ferran (the town’s 18th century citadel, parts open to the public)

Museu de L’Emporda (local archaeology, art, and a room dedicated to Narcis Monturiol)

Museu de Joguets (Toy Museum in the Hotel Paris – 3,000 traditional children’s toys).

Monestir de Vilabertran (Augustinian abbey, one of the finest examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture. 2km from Figures towards Perelada)

Water Park

Platja d’Aro water park is well worth a visit if you have kids. Go early in your holiday as it is expensive. On the up side you can purchase half price and sometimes depending on the promotion you can get free tickets for another visit. This way you will get two visits for the price of one!

If you plan to go then GO EARLY there are large queues to get tickets during the season.

You may be able to purchase tickets on-line see the link .

The Plarja d’Aro park is not as busy as the loret de Mar park and in my opinion is more suitable for young children although it is smaller it is easier to get around.

We went several times last year as we had lots of family visiting with kids of varying ages. There is something for everyone but go prepared. The car park is free and large. It is very near the park so not far to walk with the picnic basket.

The picnic areas are very good and you can hire sun beds and sit by the pool if you don’t want to engage in the thrill of the rides. Last year my family shamed me into trying out all the rides! Given that I have teen age children it goes without saying that I am not in my first flush of youth! I will finish by saying the kamikaze ride was akin to a surgical procedure! I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

The rest of the experience was great fun ( embarrassing your teenagers can be so much fun, well I must have my compensations! )

In summary bring lots of drinks, sun lotion as it washes off on the slides, and hats.Go on a hot day as you spent a lot of time wet and waiting in line.

Wish you were here.

The Tired City Girl.
